Prayer

Person 1: “I’m going through this tough time. ”

Person 2: “I’ll pray for you…”

I’m gonna go ahead and call out the big elephant in the room. At one point or another every Christian has said, “I’ll pray for you.” Chances are, you’ve said it multiple times this week! BUT, how often do we say those very words… and never mean it. How often do we say those words and the truth is, we just want an easy way out of the conversation. We really don’t want to hear anymore about the subject, and out of habit say, “I’ll pray for you”… and never actually pray?

I’m guilty of it. Shoot, I still struggle with it on a day to day basis. However, that’s not right! Don’t tell someone you’re gonna pray for them, unless you actually mean it. Don’t take prayer lightly. Don’t take it so light, that it’s your escape button out of a conversation. “I’ll pray for you” should NOT be the easy button out of a conversation!

If you tell someone you’re going to pray for them… actually do it.

  • Very good point!! I have been guilty of that, and the Lord has used a friend of mine – who is a prayer “warrior” – to help me change. I am very careful to say those words now! When I do, I try to remind myself immediately to go ahead and pray, and not wait for later.

  • That’s great to hear Barby! It’s always awesome to have friends that build you up in your walk, instead of tear you down!

  • I have hit that escape button myself :( And I’ve been on the requesting end of the pray request hoping that I was actually being prayed for……which has actually allowed me to be reminded that If those words come out of my mouth, I better own up and keep my word.. Thanks for being authentic Ili.

  • I love it when elephants are called out. Nice work, Ileana. I used to do that often – mostly because if I don’t write something down right away…it’s pretty much gone. This might be super geeky (not that there’s anything wrong with that), but one of the things I started doing after having similar encounters was scribbling people’s names down on a 3×5 card. (I am anti long prayer lists). I carry that thing around in my devo stack (a random collection of texts I read…different from my DEVO hat, which is also fun). I write down the date and situation and keep them on my “D.P.L.” (daily prayer list…but “D.P.L.” is more fun to say) until the end of the month and either check in with them for another round or remove them at the end. It’s kind of nice to see the cards over the months and see how God has worked in those situations…and in me.

  • You are so right. Today I said it once. And I’ll do it before going to bed :)

  • What a great and TRUE blog…I think we all struggle with this when life is going at zillion miles a minute – but it should NEVER be taken or said lightly. Thank you for sharing with us and holding us accountable. One of the biggest blessing we could be in someone’s life is to bring them and their burden before the throne (we should know, because we’ve all been on the recipient of those prayers at one time or another in our own lives.)

    Love ya!

Country Cuban

Ileana Ortiz (a.k.a. Country Cuban) is the Director of Online Communities at Flamingo Road Church. She is a Jesus lover, people lover, and a world changer. Her family has seriously impacted the way she lives her life. She gets her sense of humor and passion for helping others, from her mom. She gets her business sense and realistic expectations from her dad. She wishes she could match the game of her little sister, because her little sister has had more boyfriends in her 7 year life span, than Ileana has ever met, in her 17 years of living. She loves to think of herself as a comedian, and hopes that people are laughing with her, not at her. She is constantly being mistaken for celebrities such as Shakira, Jennifer Lopez, Penelope Cruz, Jessica Alba, Beyonce, Taylor Swift, and Angelina Jolie. She also happens to enjoy reading, writing, some good country music, all things tech, and when autumn rolls around.... a frothy Pumpkin Spice Latte from Starbucks! I guess you could just say that she is your average 17 year old.. well.. not really.
